February 16, 2014 / Chemical Accident in Scarborough Results in Burns to Worker – We recently moved to a new location on Coronation Drive in Scarborough. Today, we learned that one of our neighbours experienced an accident resulting in serious burns to the legs of a worker, the result of a chemical used at the facility. As reported by 680 News, the accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. at Digital Specialty Chemicals in Scarborough. Toronto Fire Services Capt. David Eckerman said there were eight people in the building at the time and they found one man covered in a chemical believed to be cyclopentadiene — a derivative of coal tar used to make insecticides and plastic. “When we arrived one employee was covered in a black substance,” Eckerman said. “We decontaminated this person in a mobile shower.” The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with burns to his legs. Police said there’s no danger to people in the surrounding area. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
