For people working at heights, risks are ever-present. Our instructor-led training focuses on keeping these risks to a minimum. Aligned with CSA standards, our course is a fine blend of theory and hands-on components. You will learn how to safely inspect and operate a vehicle-mounted aerial lift.

What You Need on Bucket Truck Training Day
Our elevating work platform training which includes bucket truck, vehicle-mounted aerial lift and cherry picker in Ontario requires you to meet a set of eligibility criteria, which has been detailed below for your convenience:
- Having proof of valid CPO-approved Working At Heights (or Newfoundland and Labrador equivalent O.Reg 751/20 s.1) certificate is mandatory.
- Following your corporate safety procedures which likely includes the use of the following CSA-approved personal protective equipment (PPE):
- Full-body harness
- CSA-approved safety shoes
- High visibility wear
- Hard hat.
- Dressing according to weather conditions.

1. Who needs bucket truck certification in Ontario?
All workers who are regularly using aerial lifts like vehicle-mounted devices. It doesn’t matter which industry you belong to - certification is a must if your job involves operating these machines. For bucket truck specifically, workers in the horticulture/landscaping/tree care business working as arborists, workers in power utilities like linesman, workers installing or maintaining electrical equipment and signage are just a few examples where workers will likely require bucket truck training.
2. Is Act First Safety’s elevating work platform training compliant with CSA standards?
Yes, it is. Our course is completely compliant with the specific standards pertaining to elevating work platforms, namely C225:20 Vehicle-mounted aerial devices.
3. Is it possible to take this course online?
Unfortunately, no. Our instructor-led aerial lift course for bucket trucks requires practical sessions, which makes in-person training mandatory. You can browse our collection of E-Learning Courses here for lots of other options for e-learning.
4. How long is the certificate valid for?
Three years.
5. Can you teach me to drive a bucket truck?
This training covers only the operation of the aerial platform mounted on the vehicle chassis. Only the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) or other provincial equivalents can issue a driver’s license. Some bucket trucks may be driven by an operator with a class G or equivalent while others may require a class DZ or equivalent driver’s license.
6. Are all bucket trucks insulated for electrical safety?
No. While many vehicle-mounted aerial devices are insulated for working in proximity to electrical hazards there are some that are not. Even when insulated, operators must be aware of the voltage of electrical hazards and category of insulated aerial device they are operating.
