Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification – Part 2
JHSC Certification Training Part 2 in Toronto
Now that you have established that your workplace requires a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and certification training is mandatory, you understand that to be compliant with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), JHSC Part 2 is needed upon successful completion of JHSC Part 1 certification training. JHSC Part 2 training is a two-day course that is both practical and applicable. The training covers six specific hazards, making it effective and relevant for participants. This exploration during class can be reported back to the committee and applied directly to their workplace.
The core idea is to move beyond theoretical concepts and apply the skills learned in Part 1 to real-world scenarios. The concepts of hazard recognition, assessment and control, and evaluation of hazard controls is more deeply explored. By studying specific hazards, participants gain the practical knowledge they need to:
- Identify and Assess Risks: They learn to recognize the signs of a hazard, understand its potential consequences, and evaluate the level of risk it poses to workers.
- Propose and Develop Controls: The training guides them in finding and recommending effective control measures to eliminate or minimize the hazard, such as engineering controls, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Communicate Effectively: They practice reporting their findings and recommendations clearly to the committee and management, which is a vital skill for getting action taken on safety issues.
This "action-oriented" approach ensures that the knowledge gained in the classroom is immediately useful and can be applied directly to their workplace. It turns the JHSC member into a proactive problem-solver rather than just a passive observer.

Part 2 Learning Objectives
Additionally, Part 2 JHSC certification training focuses on strengthening participants’ understanding of the RACE methodology (Recognition, Assessment, Control, and Evaluation) and teaches problem-solving techniques that members can apply to hazards they encounter in their workplaces.
Topics in Part 2 JHSC include:
- Reviewing key concepts from JHSC Part 1 training
- Learning to use the process of hazard recognition, assessment, control, and evaluation
- Applying the RACE methodology to each hazard module
- Creating a draft action plan and recommendations for safety
Participants learn how to apply these concepts to a minimum of six (6) hazards relevant to their own workplaces. The learner will practice drafting action plans and recommendations for the employer through activities.

FAQs
How can committee members determine hazards in their workplace?
The employer should conduct a workplace hazard assessment to select the most relevant Part 2 training for members of the JHSC to become certified. Employers should conduct this assessment in consultation with their JHSC. However, the assessment process and actionable items are duplicated for each hazard, making the exploration of any hazard in Part 2 training an excellent experience for committee members.
Will JHSC Part 2 certification training provide the skills needed to be an effective member of the committee?
Yes. JHSC Part 2 certification training provides participants with the information and tools they need as JHSC members to recognize, assess and recommend controls for the hazards commonly found in their own workplace and industry sectors.
