Safe Operation of a Forklift/Lift Truck Training Program
Forklifts/Lift trucks are integral pieces of equipment used to move and handle material safely and efficiently in many environments. Their widespread use requires that individuals working with and around lift trucks recognize hazards associated with the equipment and the environment in which they are operated.
Our Safe Operation of a Forklift/Lift Truck Program makes participants aware of their legal responsibilities and provides the required information to achieve the theory portion of becoming a competent operator. Once the course has been successfully completed, a certificate will be printed and must be signed in the space provided by a competent individual verifying that a hands-on practical evaluation has been completed within your facility.

Section 64 – Operator requirements
An employer must ensure that a lifting device is only operated by a competent worker authorized by the employer to operate the equipment.
At the employer’s request, an operator, before operating a lifting device, must be able to demonstrate that the worker is competent in the equipment’s operation and knowledgeable about load charts and the code of signals for hoisting operations. No worker other than the competent worker authorized by the employer may operate a lifting device. British Columbia Legislation
OHS Regulations Part 16
Section 16.4 – Competency of operators
1. A person must not operate mobile equipment unless the person (a) has received adequate instruction in the safe use of the equipment, (b) has demonstrated to a qualified supervisor or instructor competency in operating the equipment
Manitoba Legislation
Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 217/2006
“Powered lift truck” means powered mobile equipment that is (a) designed to allow the operator to lift, carry and unload a load
Section 22.29
2. No employer shall issue a certificate to a worker to operate a powered lift truck unless the employer has first ensured that the worker (a) has received instruction, training and testing in the operation of the powered lift truck in accordance with a code of practice approved and issued under the Act; (b) is familiar with the operating procedures of the truck that the worker will be operating; and (c) has demonstrated competency in the operation of the truck that the worker will be operating in accordance with the code of practice referred to in clause (a).
New Brunswick Legislation
NEW BRUNSWICK REGULATION 91-191 PART XV MATERIALS HANDLING EQUIPMENT AND
PERSONNEL CARRYING EQUIPMENT – Section 216
1. An employer shall ensure that an industrial lift truck (b) is operated by a competent employee, “Competent” means (a) qualified, because of such factors as knowledge, training and experience, to do assigned work in a manner that will ensure the health and safety of persons, (b) knowledgeable about the provisions of the Act and the regulations that apply to the assigned work, and (c) knowledgeable about potential or actual danger to health or safety connected with the assigned work
Newfoundland/Labrador Legislation
REGULATION 70/09 – Section 252
1. A person shall not operate mobile equipment unless he or she (a) has received adequate instruction and has demonstrated to a supervisor or instructor that he or she is a competent equipment operator; (b) has been authorized to operate mobile equipment

“Lifting Device” means a device that is used to raise or lower material or an object, but does not include a crane or hoist.”
Section 204
2. Subject to subsections (3), (4) and (5), an employer or contractor shall: (a) designate a worker to operate a hoist, crane or lifting device; (b) ensure that the designated operator is trained in the operation of that hoist, crane or lifting device; and (c) ensure that no worker operates a hoist, crane or lifting device other than a designated operator
6. No worker shall operate a hoist, crane or lifting device unless the worker is a designated operator and has been trained in the operation of that hoist, crane or lifting device.
