On January 1, 2017 an amendment to O. Reg 213/91, establishing O. Reg 242/16, came into force in Ontario that increases the responsibilities of employers whose workers use Suspended Work Platform Systems (Swing Stages), as well as other suspended access equipment (SAE).
The most significant changes in this amended legislation include:
- More stringent equipment testing, maintenance and safety checks;
- Detailed plans for how swing stages are set-up on projects;
- Better training for workers and supervisors who operate suspended access equipment;
- Stronger emphasis on written emergency procedures and rescue plans; and
- Precautions required to protect workers and others on the ground.

Act First Safety’s training program for suspended work platform systems training is in compliance with the new training requirements specified in the amended regulation including s.138 and s.138.1 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
Our training includes theory and practical hands-on demonstrations to ensure workers and supervisors understand and practice the procedures necessary to safely set up and operate suspended work platform equipment*. During the training participants must demonstrate proficiency in operating swing stages(suspended work platform systems). We offer both the Users course (1 Day) and Riggers course(2 Days). * AFS training does not cover use of a Boatswain’s chair.

- Choose, use, inspect and maintain prescribed personal protection equipment (PPE)

- Analyze roof and system installation drawings and instructions

- Apply mathematical formulas for calculating live load platform capacities

Pre-requisite Training Required
Due to the nature of potential hazards when using suspended work platform systems, training participants must have completed the following pre-requisite training before registering in a SWPS training session:
- Working-At-Heights (this training must have been completed since April, 2015)
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
- Worker Health and Safety Awareness
Act First Safety provides all of these pre-requisite training programs. These training sessions are designed as building blocks to support the SWPS training, ensuring there are no gaps in learning outcomes and to further participants competency. Participants receive the complete training they need to meet Ontario’s legislated requirements under O. Reg 242/16 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA).
