What is the Difference Between Part 1 and Part 2 JHSC Training? Do You Need Both?
To be certified under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members must complete two separate training sessions — Part 1 and Part 2.
Part 1 is a three-day instructor-led course. It is the first step in training JHSC members, providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to establish an effective workplace health & safety program. This includes learning about their roles and responsibilities for identifying and controlling hazards, making recommendations, inspecting the workplace and investigating accidents.
Part 1 training concludes with a Ministry of Labour (MOL)-developed test.
Part 2 certification training builds on what participants learned in Part 1, and must be completed within 6 months after Part 1. This second session is two days in length and focuses on strengthening participants’ understanding of the RACE methodology (Recognition, Assessment, Control and Evaluation). Participants learn problem-solving techniques they can apply to specific hazards they may encounter in their workplaces.
For the purposes of Part 2 training, six applicable hazards are chosen that are suitable to the employer’s workplace. This helps participants adapt their training to address real challenges they may experience in their day-to-day work.
There is no Ministry of Labour exam at the end of Part 2 training. Instead, participants walk away with an action plan that can be integrated into committee duties when they return to their workplace.
At this time, JHSC Part 1 and Part 2 is also the best training choice for health and safety representatives working in organizations with fewer than 20 workers and where training is needed. It provides a solid understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the health and safety representative.
